Creation of a Daily Living Simulation Suite

“The goals of home health care services are to help individuals to improve function and live with greater independence; to promote the client’s optimal level of well-being; and to assist the patient to remain at home, avoiding hospitalisation or admission to long-term care institutions” (Ellenbecker, Samia, Cushman and Alster, 2008).

Creation of a Daily Living Simulation Suite

The University of Salford, within the School of Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work and Social Sciences (now the school of Health Sciences), was building their hi-fidelity simulation department. Employed as the High-Fidelity simulation technician and provided guidance and support to lecturers on staging their clinical practicals into immersive learning experiences. There was an opportunity from Health Education England (HEE) for funding to ensure students were appropriately prepared for emergencies upon graduation. Utilising my governance experience and advice, we developed learning experiences derived from NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA) and CQC reports. I then wrote the bid for HEE funding to the department, which enabled the university to purchase £65,000 for new simulation equipment to support the creation of simulation scripts that would lead to students being exposed to low frequency / high mortality clinical events. One project, Creation of a Daily Living Simulation Suite, led me to co-present at the 2015 SIMGHOSTS conference in Australia via video-link with a highly respected lecturer in Occupational Therapy, who has numerous patents for specialist equipment for patients.
